Musing on Iced

Last month I told you about Iced, it was a gift I received for Christmas and a book on my bookshelf to be reviewed.

Iced is the sixth book in the series created by Karen Marie Moning. Books one to five follow the adventures of MacKayla Lane a reluctant sidhe-seer with the ability to sense and hunt the Dark Book of Magic. The stories take place in Fever World, an urban fantasy Dublin where Fae and humans exist. The wall between their world has fallen and now humans are dying and chaos reigns. With each book, Mackayla delves deeper into the world of the Fae and the mystery of who killed her sister, Alina. Mac’s best friend is Danielle Mega O’Malley, Dani, until that is Dani tries to kill her in Shadowfever.

I’ve only made it about 50 pages into the book and I’m hooked. I found the Unseelie Princes to be pretty cool. I liked how Karen has taken that idea and changed it just enough to make it her own but still keep the concept of the four Horseman as terrifying creatures. In the beginning of the story we learn that Dani believes that she has killed an Unseelie Prince, or at least she’s pretty sure he’s dead.

I like Dani. She’s 14 and full of spunk and guts. Oh yeah and she’s got super powers. Dani is part Fae and part human, she’s really fast and has super senses. The fact that she is a killer does and doesn’t bother me. I don’t like heroines that are squeamish over what has to be done; Dani is not that type of character. She’s not afraid to survive or ashamed of her desire. It was a bit disturbing when she decided to start killing people in Chester’s but that’s her. Dani has protection and leadership skills that will keep her alive and get her into trouble, but that’s also a part of her charm.
