Musing on my first love, Doctor Who?

billie and christopherI love Doctor Who! Absolutely love the character. I was introduced to the Doctor in 2009. It was a glorious introduction that involved bonding with a new friend over beer in a faraway place (Alaska, okay so maybe not that far). She knew who the Doctor was and promised me that I would love it and she was right.

For those of you who don’t know about the Doctor, “Doctor Who” has been around for a long time. The first television episode aired in Britain on May 23, 1964. In the United States “Doctor Who” has had a rough run since the first episode aired in January 1965. However, in Britain the series aired uninterrupted until 1989, during which time there were seven Doctors. Then in 1996 “Doctor Who” came back for one season. It was revived again in 2006 and has continued to run uninterrupted inspiring the imagination of new generation of Whovians.

I began with the Russell T Davies revamp in 2006 that starred Christopher Eccleston, as the Doctor, and Billie Piper, as Rose Tyler. Since then I have watched that first season at least ten times; and yes I could and will watch them ten more times. To try and pick one thing about “Doctor Who” that hooked me is impossible – fantastical creatures, impossible situations, great acting, and an even better story. Or maybe it was the man with old eyes and the blue box that is bigger on the inside.

If you’ve met the Doctor then you know even the simplest of trips will turn into a grand adventure where the world is at risk. And oh, can you just imagine what that would feel like, to be the closest person to the only person who can stop it. But even more alluring is the fact that he needs you. Every time I watch an episode I am drawn into the fantasy and wouldn’t have it any other way.
